BP Oil Spill Lawsuit Information

As we all wonder when the leaking oil will stop we can't help but make comparisons to the Exxon Valdez oil spill. The Exxon Valdez oil spill happened over 20 years ago and it's affects are still present. Now that the BP oil spill has surpassed it with no end in sight.

It is estimated that 210,000 gallons of oil continues to spill into the Gulf each day. BP has tried to plug the well but has yet to be successful and it seems that we may not get a solution till August 2010.

The fishing industry has been hit the hardest as the spill area has claimed 46,000 square miles of ocean area that has been closed to fishing. The Gulf tourist attractions are in bad shape as the oil continues to wash ashore and into waterways. Tourism brings in a large amount of the money that keeps the shore towns alive and without it businesses will struggle. Many lawsuits have already been filed against BP for damages done and many more will be filed as the situation gets worse and the oil spreads further along the Gulf Coast.

As of May 25th,The initial Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion has claimed 11 lives, injured 17 of which 3 were critical and 1 remains in the hospital.

The Oil Pollution Act (OPA)

The OPA is a law that passed in 1990 after the Exxon Valdez oil spill occurred in 1989. The OPA was enacted in order to prevent oil spills and force companies to have a detailed containment and cleanup plan if an accident occurs. The OPA helped to create a trust fund that can be used for oil spill cleanup efforts if the liable company cannot pay for cleanup efforts.
